Is a puppy packet template worth buying, or is there something better?
A fillable puppy packet template is a good buy if you have one or two puppies, and a poor one if you have a litter — because the template is filled in once per puppy, so a litter of eight means typing the same pedigree, feeding plan and worming dates eight times. The work a template cannot remove is the retyping, and that is most of the work.
What you get for a few dollars, and it is genuinely a lot
The marketplace templates are good value and it is worth saying so. For the price of a coffee you get a designed set of forms — puppy profile, pedigree, vaccination and worming record, weight tracker, socialization checklist, feeding sheet, a cover page — usually as a fillable PDF, a Word file or a Canva design, in both US Letter and A4, often in two or three colourways.
If you have never sent paperwork home before, buying one of these is the correct first move. It tells you what the pages should be, which is most of the value, and it will look better than anything you would lay out yourself on a first attempt.
The three places a template stops helping
The first is repetition. A template is a form, and a form is filled in once per puppy. Eight puppies is eight copies of the same pedigree, the same parents’ health tests, the same feeding plan and the same worming dates, typed out or copy-pasted eight times. It is not difficult work. It is just an evening, every litter, forever.
The second is the chart. Every template has a weight tracker, and every weight tracker is a grid of empty boxes. Filling the boxes gives you a table of numbers; it does not give you a plotted puppy weight chart, and the growth curve is the thing a new owner’s vet will actually look at. Drawing one means exporting to a spreadsheet and making a chart by hand.
The third is drift. Change the feeding plan on go-home morning and you have eight files to open. Miss one and one family goes home with different instructions from the rest of the litter, and nobody finds out until it matters.
