Should a breeder send a socialization record home with the puppy?
Yes, and it is the most undervalued page in the packet. A dated record of what a puppy has already met — surfaces, sounds, people, car rides, crate nights, the first bath, nail trims — tells the new family what has been done and, by omission, what has not, which is the most useful handover a breeder can give a puppy going into a critical socialization window.
A record, not a checklist
Most puppy socialization checklists on sale are blank lists of things to expose a puppy to, printed for the new owner to work through after go-home day. Those are useful and they are a different document. What almost nobody sends is a record of what the breeder already did, with dates.
The difference matters to the family. A blank checklist says here is what you should do. A dated record says this puppy has ridden in a car four times, met nine adults and two children, walked on grass, gravel, tile and metal grating, heard a vacuum and a doorbell, spent six nights in a crate, and has never met a cat. Everything on that list is something the family no longer has to guess at, and the gap at the end is the most useful sentence in it.
What to record, and how much
Surfaces, sounds, people, other animals, handling, travel and separation are the usual groupings. Grooming firsts belong there too — first bath, first nail trim, first brush-out — because they are the handling a family will have to repeat in week one.
Keep entries short and dated. "14 Aug — car ride, 20 min, no sickness" is worth more than a tick in a box, and it takes about the same time to write down at the time. What you will not do is reconstruct it in go-home week, which is the real reason most breeders do not send this page.
